It’s been awhile since we have done a tutorial. Things have
been crazy in the Yerkes household. As
promised in our last tutorial, we are going to share our DIY shiplap frame with
you all.
We wanted a statement piece for above our new guest bed, but
not another sign. Framed shiplap has taken over Instagram lately. If you aren’t
ready to take the plunge and shiplap a whole room or wall, but love the look,
this is the perfect compromise.
The final dimensions for our picture frame ended up being 38”
x 24” and fit perfectly over the queen size bed.
Okay, let’s get started. First, we cut the 1x4 with the
miter saw. You will want to make the cuts at 45 degree angels on each end. You
can either move your miter saw with each cut or flip the wood and always keep
the saw at 45°. We chose to move the saw for each cut. *Note- if you don’t
want the diagonal cuts or don’t have a miter saw, you can do the frame with
straight cuts and have HD or Lowe’s cut the wood for you.*
As always, make sure to sand the wood once you have made
your cuts. After we sanded the wood, we placed the pieces together to make sure
the cuts were done correctly.
As you can see, our cuts aren’t perfect, but close enough.
Now we moved on to stain and paint. Stain the 1x4’s and set them aside to dry.
Paint the five 3/8x4 pieces and set them
aside to dry as well.
Once everything is dry, you can start putting together the
frame. To do this, line the frame back up and make sure your edges are as close
together as possible. With your staple gun, staple together each corner. You
may want to use 2-3 staples per corner to ensure durability. Then, lay the shiplap pieces, evenly
spaced apart, along the back of the frame. Ok, if we're being completely honest, we just eyeballed this part.
When you have them where you want them, you can start
nailing the strips in place. You could also use a staple gun, as long as the
staples are long enough. As you can see, we didn’t paint or stain the back of
the frame or shiplap pieces. Patience is not our friend and no one would see it
anyway.
Your shiplap picture frame is now ready to be hung in all of
its glory! It's really that easy. We added hooks on the back for easier/more secure hanging. We would
hate for the picture to fall on one of our guests while they are sleeping ;) .
We hope you enjoyed this tutorial. As always, we’d love to
see your finished product. Hashtag us on Facebook or Instagram at
